Assam, one of the green states of India, has a lot to offer besides its world famous tea. Situated in the north-eastern corner of the country, Assam is home to many rare species of flora and fauna and hosts five national parks and eighteen wildlife sanctuaries.
Kaziranga National Park has become the most popular among tourists. Wild adventure is fully guaranted. It’s a wild wild east! Home to the famous one-horned rhino, the park has been designated as ‘World Heritage’ by UNESCO in December, 1985. Besides the one horned rhino, Kaziranga is also a tiger reserve. The park is a heaven for wildlife lovers as it is one of the most bio-diverse national parks in the world. The park remains open from the month of November to April. Jeep safaris are available for three different ranges Agoratali, Bagori and Kohora. Elephant safaris are also available which gives a thrilling wild experience to the tourists.
The concept of eco-tourism has been introduced in the park. Awareness programs have been initiated for the people of the nearby villages. The locals have been actively helping the forest officials for the well being of the park.
During a visit to Kaziranga, you should also visit the nearby tea gardens. The green tea gardens can be very refreshing for the eyes and can soothe mind, body and soul. A visit to the local ‘Mising’ villages is also recommended. On arrival, every visitor is offered “Apong”, local rice beer as a sign of hospitality to the guests. It is also a great way to know the life and culture of the ‘Mising’ community who have been living in Assam for generations.
