I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while now because it’s been one of those questions that I’m asked every time I tell the story. Why do you want to ride 9000km with a cycle? The usual answer is – it’s not about cycling its about the story… but today on my training ride to the Vaal Dam I realized that it is about the bike as well.
As I write this I feel South Africa on my skin as the sun burned her into my pours. I can feel her aching in my muscles, I have her scenery imprinted in my mind. At 25km/h you experienceSouth Africa. You understand her for what she really is. She is the wind that holds you back as you hit that uphill but also the wind that cools you down. She is the road that leads your muscles to burn but she also shows you her beauty. Her sun brings you warmth and her rain quenches your thirst. Her people makes you cry but will also wrap you up in a blanket of love when those tears run down your face.
I chose a bike so I could feel the road burn my muscles, that road that shows me the beauty of a nation. I chose a bike because the wind brings me memories. I chose a bike so that the sun can speak to my skin. I chose a bike so I could hide my tears along with the rain.
Today’s training was a South African Experience. Today I saw, I felt, I remembered. Thank you for showing me…
